Undergraduate Science Slam

We have partnered with Science Slam Canada to run regular “Science Slams” for undergraduate students! This popular science communication competition showcases our undergrad science communication and teaching skills to a high school audience! All are welcome at these events, posted on our PHAS Events page and on Eventbrite. These events are regularly scheduled in October and February during the academic year.

Our next Science Slam event will be on Wednesday, October 7th, 2026!

Come join us! This event runs on Wednesday, October 7th from 5:30-7:30pm in HEBB Theatre (2045 East Mall) on UBC-V campus. We look forward to meeting high schoolers, parents, teachers and high school staff. Our department staff will be on-site to answer any questions you have about UBC science, or physics & astronomy programs.

What does a science slam presentation look like?

*Rules*: Presentations are 5 minutes long, made for a public audience (assuming no science or mathematics background), and presenters (Slammers) are forbidden to use ANY academic or technical language. The use of small props for demonstration is allowed.

*The Goal*: For the audience to understand the science concept you are explaining (and hopefully be inspired by it)!
